The component is a ‘two-axis electrical sensor’ manufactured by Anschütz, designed to orient a gyroscope prior to the rocket’s launch. The area beneath the round sensor cover is filled with a liquid containing an air bubble in the centre (in the 0-position), which can move along two axes depending on the angle of inclination. With the help of the sensor, the gyroscope could be returned to the correct 0-position.
There were two different versions of each of the two Gyroscopic guidance platforms (“Richtgeber”) - the Vertikant and the Horizont - installed in the A4 rocket (“V2”), depending on the manufacturer: either Anschütz or LGW (Luftfahrtgerätewerk Hakenfelde):
Richtgeber D LZ 39 Anschütz (Horizont StF-Ho 1a),
Richtgeber D LGW (Horizont StF-Ho 1b or later: “LEV 3 m.B.”),
Richtgeber E/A LZ 40 Anschütz (Vertikant StF-Ve 2a),
Richtgeber E/A LGW (Vertikant StF-Ve 2b or later: “LEV 3 o.B.”).
Depending on availability, horizontal platforms and vertical platforms from one of the two manufacturers were installed in the A4 series rockets in Sector III of the rocket’s control compartment, which was located between the warhead and the central section.
This ‘two-axis electrical sensor’ comes from an Anschütz “Richtgeber E/A LZ 40” vertical machine for the A4 rocket.
