T(h)anks Re: Two Jagdtiger questions Posted By: Kevin Adams Date: Wednesday, 21 June 2000, at 6:38 p.m. In Response To: Two Jagdtiger questions (Oddball) I have been wondering about the Simonides Jagdtiger for quite a while myself. I really find it hard to believe that they can't even share a picture with us. I really hope it is true. As for the 88 slinging jagdtiger's, I built a 1/35 one from DML's late production Jagdtiger, but I have never come across a picture or heard of any. I have my doubts that they ever exsisted. Later, Kevin Re: Two Jagdtiger questions Posted By: George Hallsworth Date: Thursday, 22 June 2000, at 2:53 p.m. In Response To: Two Jagdtiger questions (Oddball) I was one of those who took up their free offer, mentioned on this list last year, of going out and looking at the beast. Two days there and two days back in a Landrover is not the finest of journeys but it was well worth the effort just to see it. They were very strict - no photographs video or GPS systems and we all had to sign forms stating that we wouldn't mention where it was and limiting what we could say etc (Financial penalties!!) The thrill of climbing over a vehicle that you know was involved in one of the last battles of the war is quite a buzz. Nearby is the JSU that knocked it out or the remains of I should say as it appears that the german infantry knocked it out in turn with Panzerfausts. I am sure they won't mind me saying that its called the polish jagdtiger because it was discovered ON an expedition TO Poland and the chieftain engine thing is just to provide it with some power while they recover it. recovering it is a BIG problem for them due to the weight - 100tons? and the fact that they have to get it over an underground river with a bridge class of about 10 tons. I can understand them being secretive about it as its just lying there in the woods and anyone could come along and remove it if they knew where it was. Everyone came away with a souvenier - a link of 5 empty 7.92mm from the loads that still litter the front compartment. Magic! The simonides secretary Jim Webster frequents this list so why not ask him some questions? (what can I say) The first eye-witness account that I have found (I&m new to this forum, joint the internet community only 3 months ago). Right now there is just one little thing that I would like to know - WHAT KIND OF GUN DOES IT HAVE (88mm/128mm)? that can&t be a secret Thanks for this info! Re: Two Jagdtiger questions Posted By: Kevin Adams Date: Thursday, 22 June 2000, at 7:01 p.m. In Response To: Re: Two Jagdtiger questions (George Hallsworth) Three questions: 1.Does this Jagdtiger look pretty much the same as the standard Jagdtiger with the exception of the 88? 2. Is the gun the same 8.8cm L/71 KwK 43 that the King Tiger carried? 3. Did it have a brake? Kevin Prove it. I 'm afraid I'm a little sceptical about the existence of this vehicle. As for fitting a Chieftain engine, that is absurd. I would be grateful if you could 'lean' on your contacts to provide documentary evidence that this is gen-up, and not complete fiction as I suspect. All it would take is one photo, which would hardly divulge the location. What do they have to lose?Of course I will be glad to be proved wrong, but until then I will continue to dismiss this as complete nonsense. Don Re: Prove it. Posted By: Ron Klages Date: Friday, 23 June 2000, at 3:49 p.m. In Response To: Prove it. (Donald Campbell) You ask What to they have to lose." I would reply what do they have to gain. When the time is right, they will share. Re: Prove it. Posted By: John Hammond Date: Friday, 23 June 2000, at 4:53 p.m. In Response To: Prove it. (Donald Campbell) I was on the October trip to see it last year and George is right - it is an experience. I was most intrigued to find that you consider it a myth so what I and 5 others visited was an optical illusion. Interesting. They had some stuff about it up on the web site and under pressure they put up a few photographs but then they were annoyed at a certain minority who continually pestered them for the location so they just removed the pages from public view. One thing I have gathered from a few others is that if you start inferring that the vehicle does not even exist then your chances of getting on one of the check-out trips is practically zero. If you accuse them of telling an untruth then you receive a solicitors letter very quickly indeed. These trips incidentally are free travel. You just have to get yourself to a central location and if you can get on one then do take the chance as it is well worth it. I believe they go every three or four months and last five days with a stopover at places like Munster thrown in. JH Re: Prove it. Kevin Simonides Posted By: Donald Campbell Date: Friday, 23 June 2000, at 6:04 p.m. In Response To: Re: Prove it. (John Hammond) Hi, John. Thanks for your reply. To be honest, I was unaware of the existence of the Simonides Group until today, when I decided to have a look at the website. I was quite impressed actually, in fact if I had known of it I would have joined long ago. As it is, I've submitted my details for membership (if they'll have me!) and await confirmation. Having not been online until about 9 months ago, I was unaware of the presentation of photos on the website, so the only knowledge I have of this project is what I have read here. As a natural sceptic, and in the absence(to my knowledge)of any documentary evidence, I hope you can understand my frustration about this. If anyone was offended by my posts, I apologise.
